1. David was a daring shepherd long before he was a king, besting lions and bears in battle, armed with sticks and stones and sling. Strong, resourceful, ruddy-cheeked, David grew up tending sheep. 2. Jesus also was a shepherd -- people were his constant care. And he also battled danger, more than wolves or lions or bears. He fought anything at all that made God's great love seem small. 3. We can grow up strong like David, we can love like Jesus, too, joining hands with God the Shepherd tending all that's just and true till the while world, wide and deep, makes a place for all God's sheep.
