"Composed 1780 or before. Appears first in ''The Waterhouse Manuscript'', copied March 16, 1781, for Tenor-Bass; and in ''The Shepard Fish Manuscript'' (Massachusetts Historical Society Ms. S-290), ca. 1790, for Treble-Counter-Tenor. Kroeger (1981) gives suggestions about merging these. Words by Isaac Watts, 1709, Hymn 3 of Book 2, with six stanzas. The manuscripts have only the first stanza."
