Blessings are so much a part of Irish identity that there is not an Irish person or one of Irish descent who has not heard the blessing that begins with “May the road rise up to meet you”, which in just six verses conveys a wish for good fortune, in any circumstance of life and in the company of God, and that desire to be reunited with one’s loved ones, so present in an emigrant people like the Irish, where parents said goodbye to their children without knowing if they would see each other again."
