"A relatively long set piece; the first part is eight lines, C. M. D., and the "Chorus" is another eight lines, L. M. D. First published by Edward Miller as "The Parting" in London, 1800, for three voices, apparently ATB. Except for a reprinted version by Miller in 1803, all the rest of the publications are American. The first four-part version was an arrangement for four parts (TrCTB) by Andrew Law in 1805, entitled "Washington"; it was first called "The Band of Love" in "Wyeth's Repository, Part Second" in 1813. In the West, four-part revised editions appeared in Samuel Metcalf's ''Kentucky Harmonist'' and Allen Carden's ''Missouri Harmony''. Later editions mostly use the title "The Band of Love"."
