See, shipmates, on our starboard tack, Our much loved shore appearing, Nor can bright hopes be ta’en aback, Our barque the haven nearing; There anxious hearts and lovely forms, With kindred’s sweet emotion, Shall welcome safe from wrecks and storms, Each wanderer of the ocean. No whirling wave nor threatening surge, When in our refuge mooring, Nor wind that howls the seamen’s dirge Can fright us with their roaring; There cease the perils of the tide, We hear the waves retreating, In smoother waters safe we ride, Nor heed the tempest beating. And there we’ll tell of dangers past, Amid the deep’s emotion, When smiled beneath the angry blast The pilgrims of the ocean! For Providence was pilot there, When we were tempest driven, And then we’ll pour the grateful prayer, As incense meet for heaven. So when the storms of life are o’er, The blissful haven nearing, We’ll gave upon the heavenly shore, Our pilot safely steering; Immortal forms in bright array, From whom we ne’er shall sever, Shall joy we make the peaceful bay, And anchor there forever.
