I, a tensioned heap Of water, calcium, organic compounds, Weighing x stone and standing, for now, y feet tall, Blink out from the bone room At what little of the all, And seem, as I stare, less than a photon of starshine. I, like you, am atom matter, Born of stars dead, remassed and reshattered, Through aeons flung To lodge awhile in a sun’s, the Sun’s realm, As iron for blood, calcium for teeth, Every molecule of my DNA As plenous with atoms as the galaxy with stars. My boot, to be sure, is death to the worm, I am fifty million million cells, Yet, like an atom, I am all but void: Switch off my electricity And, discharged the repulsions that bind me, I crumble to a fine invisible dust. Like an atom, like you, like a galaxy, I am almost wholly empty space, Vessel and witness of vastitudes.
