As on a flow'ry bank I lay, Pleas'd with nature's various pride, A roving Cupid flew that way, And left his arrow in my side. Too soon I felt the cruel smart, Too late the pow'rful god I knew; And, from the anguish of my heart, My fate alas! I found too true.
