"This piece is a reflection on the seven last words of Christ and how they may have been echoed or foreshadowed in the words of Mary. Each phrase is taken from the Vulgate. Men's voices take the part of Christ, and women's voices take the part of Mary. Most verses are sung alternating Christ words first followed by Mary's, but there are a few places where both choirs sing together. A seventh voice (descant) appears at the end."
