"The hymn tune ''McShane'' honors the mathematician Edward James McShane (1904-1989), Professor Emeritus of the University of Virginia, member of the National Academy of Sciences, and avid amateur musician. It was composed shortly before his death. Lyrics by Christopher Wordsworth, 1862. In the Hymn-Anthem setting of the :Category:Christmas text, the original form of the tune is given in the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th stanzas. The more primitive sounding 1st and 4th stanzas are, in fact, not antecedents of the original tune at all, but instead they are variational artifacts composed for this setting."
