Across the waving fields of grain The shadows fast are flying, And round about the quiet plain Th’eternal hills are lying. Sweet bird song ripples from the trees, The brook is idly flowing, And on the soft caressing breeze Comes fragrance of the mowing. The earth had treasures of her own, Held close in silent keeping; Till spring renewed the burial stone, And wakened what was sleeping. The summer ripens all the land, Abundant harvests showing; While fields lie white on either hand, All ready for the mowing. I sit with folded hands and gaze On all this blessed beauty, And think of worldly work and ways, Of faith and love and duty; Of what the tender spring-times mean, And what the April’s sowing; Of all the waiting time between, Till August brings the mowing.
