"Lynn Halpern Ward (The "Motetti Missales" Repertory Reconsidered, Journal of the American Musicological Society, Vol. 39, No. 3 - Autumn 1986) has suggested that this piece may be part of a O admirabile commercium (motet cycle) (Loyset Compère): a Milanese practice of substituting the movements of a mass with motets. In most of its sources, it is grouped with other motets from this conjectural cycle. This motet appears in Librone 4, which was badly damaged in a fire while on display at the 1906 Espositzione Internationale in Milan; it follows ''O admirabile commercium - Germinavit radix Jesse (Loyset Compère)'' and ''Sanctus - O sapientia (Loyset Compère)''. The beginnings of the upper two voices have been lost. In its other sources, it appears in a different form, starting with the words ''O Genitrix gloriosa (Loyset Compère)'', and with different music music for the first part of the motet. In Petrucci's Motetti A (and a number of other sources), this is paired with ''Ave virgo gloriosa (Loyset Compère)''; in Librone 3, it is not grouped with other motets, but follows settings of the Gloria and Sanctus (a different setting from that in Ward's cycle), and may have been intended for use with them. Whether or not all the components of Ward's proposed cycle were ever performed as a unit, it seems likely that they were used in the groupings in which they appear in the Libroni."
