TO GATHERED ROSES (In imitation of Herrick) Sweete floweres! ye were too fair: With drooping lids Among your heavie morning teares I found ye. Faire buds! I left ye there: For sorrow bids Briefe greeting to gay youthe; it feares To wounde ye. But, deare roses,– in your noone That graceful merrie prime,– I stole away the lovelie boone: And was it not a crime To rob the wooing aire of your sweete breath? Ah! daintie floweres, The wanton houres Of mid-day’s golden shine, Will see ye pine To-morrowe,– and so fade away to death!
