"Words by an unknown author, apparently first published 1804; the words appear in various forms, sometimes beginning ''Come saints and sinners, hear me tell,'' ten to fifteen stanzas. "This tune probably dates from the 1770s and was called ''Cuba’s March''. It was played by American fifers well into the nineteenth century" (Keller 2012). This tune appears as ''Heavenly Union'' in William Walker's ''Southern and Western Pocket Harmonist'', 1845."
